Watching Google Play Movies in YouTube

We’ve been using Google Play Movies for a while now and built ourselves a small library. Content is available everywhere we go and easily cast to the television.

The problem is watching it on the computer, since the Google Play Movies application/plugin is a little clunky and not very responsive. What’s more, the picture isn’t very sharp.

Quite by accident, we discovered that our entire movie library is accessible via YouTube – since Google owns YouTube. It’s fantastic because YouTube’s interface is far more responsive.

There are two ways to view the library in YouTube. In the left hand navigation menu,

  • under “Purchases” (which also lists the number of titles)
  • further down under “Movies & Shows”, the library can be viewed as thumbnails.

The drawback of each:

  • Purchases: movie titles listed in the order that we purchased them, we can’t sort them alphabetically or by genre. If the list is long, it’s a long scroll. If we know the title, a page search is possible.
  • Movies & Shows: faster to scroll through thumbnails that are listed at random. Unfortunately, no sorting options exist. At least movies and television shows are separated.

Regardless, the YouTube interface functionality is a great find for our Google Play Movies library. We can bookmark our favourite movie titles in our browser, even at specific timestamps to launch right into the action.
