Problem
We’ve noticed that most movies play instantly on our android phone. Lately (Oct 2022), some movies refuse to play at all. In our case, both The Batman and Spider-Man: No Way Home were uncooperative. We’ve tried clearing the app data and cache, device restarts … all unsuccessful.
Solution
Google TV is an inferior replacement for Google Movies. Our solution was to use the YouTube app instead. Both belong to Google and both platforms have access to our digital library.
In the YouTube app, there are two paths for navigating to our digital library.
Menus towards the top
Click “Explore”, then “Movies & Shows”, then “Purchased”. Done.
Alternatively: Menus Down the Bottom
Click “Library”, then “Your movies and shows”, then “Purchased”. Done
Conclusion
The YouTube app plays movies well. Responsive and fast. It has similarly superior playback performance on PCs through the browser.
Unfortunately, there are no elegant options for browsing. No sorting.
We continue to use Google TV, but when it lets us down YouTube steps in.
